The Darwin Lecture Series celebrates the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth (February 12, 1809) and the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species. The events will highlight the benefits of scientific knowledge acquired through human curiosity and ingenuity and ways that knowledge contributes to the advancement of humanity. A set of diverse public lectures will highlight evolution: the intersection of science and religion, evolution in the public, and the nature of science.

Darwin Lecture Series:
"From Big Bang to Blue Planet"
Speaker: David Moffet
|
Yes |
How did Earth, our 'Blue Planet', come into existence? From an astronomical point of view, Dr. Moffet will address this question by discussing the observational evidence for a sequence of events that led to the creation of Earth: the Big Bang, the formation of the first stars and galaxies, the evolution of stars and the transmutation of heavy elements, astrochemistry, and ultimately the formation of our solar system and Earth.
This lecture will no doubt fuel discussion on another big question: are we alone in the Universe or has life (intelligent or not) evolved on other planets? The speaker will discuss the efforts by space scientists and astronomers to search for life in a universe in which all the physics and chemistry is the same everywhere.
